What is the fundamental difference between an inverter and a converter, and how do their core working principles differ?
September 25, 2025

The core difference between an inverter and a converter lies in their primary function and the direction of power conversion. A converter is a broad term that typically refers to a device that converts electrical energy from one form to another, which can include AC-to-DC (rectifier), DC-to-AC (inverter), AC-to-AC (frequency converter, a subset of converters), or DC-to-DC conversion. In contrast, an inverter is a specific type of converter with a sole focus on converting direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

In terms of working principles, let’s break down the two key types: AC-to-DC converters (rectifiers) and DC-to-AC inverters. For AC-to-DC converters, the core process involves rectification—using semiconductor components such as diodes, thyristors, or IGBTs to convert alternating current (which changes direction periodically) into pulsating direct current. This pulsating DC is then smoothed using filter capacitors or inductors to produce stable DC power. For example, in a single-phase full-wave rectifier, four diodes form a bridge circuit that conducts current in both halves of the AC cycle, ensuring continuous DC output.

Inverters, on the other hand, convert stable DC power into AC power with controllable voltage and frequency. The core principle relies on pulse-width modulation (PWM) technology. The inverter’s control unit generates PWM signals to switch power semiconductor devices (e.g., IGBTs, MOSFETs) on and off at high frequencies. By adjusting the width and sequence of these pulses, the inverter synthesizes a sine-wave AC output that approximates the desired voltage and frequency. This controllability makes inverters essential in applications requiring precise speed control of AC motors or stable power supply for sensitive electronics.
